It is composed of a group of bodies that carry blood throughout the body. The heart pumps blood in the arteries and veins of transportation. Blood oxygen-rich leaves the left side of the heart and spends most artery, called the aorta. The aorta branches in small arteries, which at the same branch smaller vessels that travel throughout the body. When blood enters the smallest blood vessels, called capillaries, and can be found in the tissues, it provides nutrients and oxygen to cells, and takes into carbon dioxide, water and waste. The blood, which contains more oxygen and nutrients, and then goes back to the heart through the veins. Veins carry waste out of blood cells and to bring back to heart, which pumps it to the lungs to take in oxygen and remove waste carbon dioxide.

Blood Flows in this order:

The superior (a) and inferior (b) vena cava are the main veins that receive blood from the body. The superior vena cava drains the head and arms, and the inferior vena cava drains the lower body.

The right atrium receives blood from the body via the vena cavae. The atria are on the top in the heart.

The blood then passes through the right atrioventricular valve, which is forced shut when the ventricles contract, preventing blood from reentering the atrium.

The blood goes into the right ventricle (note that it has a thinner wall; it only pumps to lungs). The ventricles are on the bottom of the heart.

The right semilunar valve marks the beginning of the artery. Again, it is supposed to close to prevent blood from flowing back into the ventricle.

The pulmonary artery or pulmonary trunk is the main artery taking deoxygenated blood to the lungs.

Blood goes to the right and left lungs, where capillaries are in close contact with the thin-walled alveoli so the blood can release CO2 and pick up O2.

From the lungs, the pulmonary vein carries oxygenated blood back into the heart.

The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs.

The blood passes through the left atrioventricular valve.

The blood enters the left ventricle. Note the thickened wall; the left ventricle must pump blood throughout the whole body.

The blood passes through the left semilunar valve at the beginning of the aorta.

The aorta is the main artery to the body. One of the first arteries to branch off is the coronary artery, which supplies blood to the heart muscle itself so it can pump. The coronary artery goes around the heart like a crown. A blockage of the coronary artery or one of its branches is very serious because this can cause portions of the heart to die if they don’t get nutrients and oxygen. This is a coronary heart attack. From the capillaries in the heart muscle, the blood flows back through the coronary vein, which lies on top of the artery.

The aorta divides into arteries to distribute blood to the body.

Small arteries are called arterioles.

The smallest vessels are the capillaries.

These join again to form venules, the smallest of the veins.

These, in turn, join to form the larger veins, which carry the blood back to the superior and inferior vena cava.

Balancing the Diet

Maintain a balanced diet is one of the obstacles difficult to type 2 diabetes mellitus patients endure every day. It is the primary intervention or management to prevent attacks have hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. Variety of food supplements are coming into the market which promises therapeutic effects or aid to a certain disease or illness. Thousands of these types have the same content but different names and marketing strategies to attract consumers.

Supplemental nutrients are needed for those who suffer from diabetes mellitus non-insulin dependent, since not all the nutrients they need are can be found in most of our daily diet. They need something that can help metabolize blood sugar more effectively than others. The Food Control in patients with diabetes might also help prevent the development of certain complications such as neuropathy, which could lead to more problems and restrictions of lifestyle usual.

A balance that covers diet food pyramid is the right diet not only for those who have diabetes mellitus, but for all of us. But for some reason, it is not easy to follow the dietary needs to complete the body of the nutrients needed.

The reason for rampant use of food supplements is popular in the world, it is because some of the food we need to get a well-balanced diet because of the lifestyle that we have occupied. See if you heard - or believes - one of the following myths about food allergies:

1. "You're" allergic "to any food that gives you problems." This assertion is false, because there are several problems that can occur after eating specific foods, the majority of whom are unrelated to the allergy. True food allergies are immunological reactions involving the class of immunoglobulin (proteins that help the body's immune response) known as immunoglobulins (Ig) E. Other types of reactions to foods that are not food allergies include food (such as milk or lactose intolerance), food poisoning and toxic reactions. The prevalence of food allergy in the population is much lower than the prevalence of adverse reactions to foods. It is estimated that the true food allergies occur in 2-5% of the population.

2. "All food allergies among children resolve as they age." As they grow older, some children can tolerate foods that previously caused allergic reactions. This is more likely to occur in the case of allergies to milk, eggs, and wheat, whose seriousness of the reactions (or symptoms) can decrease towards the end of childhood. It is not clear in all cases, however, if the improvement of symptoms are an indication that the allergy has disappeared. For example, in wheat allergy (celiac disease) can improve symptoms but mild allergic reaction continues in the intestine, and symptoms and signs of allergy may recur years later. On the other hand, milk allergy seems truly disappear as children grow up.

3.

"Allergy to peanuts is the most common food allergy." Allergy to peanuts is food allergy is the most likely cause of anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions potentially deadly), but only about 0.6% of the population is affected by the peanut allergy. Food allergies the most common reported by adults are allergic to fruits and vegetables.

4. "Food allergies always begin in childhood." Allergies to fruits and vegetables may develop later in life because of similarities in fruit and vegetables with allergenic proteins suspended in the air, such as pollen. Allergens airborne causes the body to produce Ig E, and E Ig then reacts with proteins similar in fruits and vegetables.

5. "Allergy shots are an effective treatment for food allergies." Desensitization to certain allergens by the injection of extracts small amounts of the allergen over a long period was an effective therapy for certain allergies (such as allergies to pollens). However, there is no scientific evidence that such plans can prevent allergic reactions to food.

Allergy

An allergy refers to the overreaction of the immune system in response to bodily contact with some foreign substances. It is an exaggeration, because these substances are generally regarded by the agency as innocuous and no reaction occurs in the non-allergic. People who are allergic bodies to recognize the foreign substance and part of the immune system is activated. Allergy-producing substances are called allergens. " Examples include allergenic pollen, dust mites, molds, danders, and foods. To understand the language of allergy, it is important to remember that Allergens are substances that are foreign to the body and can cause an allergic reaction in some people.

When an allergen comes in contact with the body, it causes the immune system to develop an allergic reaction in people who are allergic to it. When you react inappropriately to allergens that are normally harmless to other people, you experience an allergic reaction and can be considered as being allergic or atopic. Therefore, people who are prone to allergies are supposed to be allergic or atopic. "

Pirquet Austrian pediatrician Clemens (1874-1929), the term first used allergy. He referred to the time that immunity has been beneficial and harmful to sensitivities as "allergy." The term allergy is derived from the Greek word "allos, meaning different or modified and ergos", which means "work or action. Allergy roughly refers to an "alteration reaction." The word was first used allergy in 1905 to describe the adverse effects of children who received repeated blows horse serum to fight infection. The following year, the term of allergy has been proposed to explain this unexpected "changed reactivity."

Transition of both worlds

Nearly thirty years after the nerve wracking September morning I entered the school of nursing, I remember often the first conference and presentation. That's because it was the day when I knew that I did not leave under any circumstances. I would have liked to know that he was quite because I knew that the field of nursing was for me was that the nursing or in my blood.

Quite frankly, just after the instructor came and covered the relevant facts and the story of two nurses and school (New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing), she asked us to look at both sides us and remember the faces of our new comrades class because at least half of them would not be present at graduation. Some will leave voluntarily and some would be asked to leave. Immediately, I felt my heart start to the race. It suddenly occurred to me that this was a serious matter and all other things aside with my competitive nature stoked, there was no way I was quitting. A challenge was issued and I thought I was at the height, if for no other reason that I wanted to be right and responsibility… Well, my father has always said that I had to have the last word.

Since that time I have met funny, scary, fuzzy and fantastic circumstances in my rough Studentnurseworld to Realnurseworld. Even those who are convinced that I, I could not or did not want to continue on the trek me somehow propelled even further forward. This need is met by the coronary arteries, two small vessels on the outer surface of the heart muscle. The right coronary artery supplies the undersurface of the heart. The left artery runs for about an inch at the top of the heart before dividing into two main branches called the "left anterior descending," traveling to the front of the heart, and "circumflex" supplying the back of the heart. These three arteries (right, left anterior descending and circumflex) and their branches send smaller tributaries into the substance of the hart muscle to supply it with the oxygen and nutrients needed to contract and pump normally.

The coronary arteries are more susceptible than most other arteries to athererosclerosis (also known as arteriosclerosis), a buildup of cholesterol with the walls of the vessels. When severe, this buildup may obstruct the artery. Under resting conditions, the blood flowing through the diseased coronary artery may be sufficient to supply a specific area of heart muscle, but under more demanding conditions, such as exercise, when the heart is working harder and requires oxygen and nutrients, the obstruction may not allow sufficient blood through to meet the needs of the heart area it supplies. An imbalance of oxygen supply and demand (called "ischemia") is created. When this occurs, the afflicted individual often experiences symptoms of chest discomfort called "angina pectoris."

A diseased coronary artery can also become unstable, resulting in ulceration or total disruption of a cholesterol deposit. This often leads to major problems. An ulcerated or disrupted coronary artery is susceptible to blood clots forming on its exposed surface. When this occurs, the vessel can become completely occluded. As a result, the portion of heart muscle supplied by that artery becomes starved for vital oxygen and nutrients. If the occlusion persists for more than an hour, the affected muscle begins to die. This is usually accompanied by severe, persistent crushing pain over the center of the chest, the prime symptom of a heart attack.

When this symptom strikes, it is urgent to get to the nearest hospital emergency room-- immediately! Cardiologists can now thread a balloon catheter from the groin into the blocked area and open it up, salvaging precious heart muscle, which can substantially improve long-term prognosis. Remember: your heart is a remarkably resilient organ. It can suffer significant damage before impairment in function occurs. The outlook for patients with coronary atherosclerosis depends on the extent of heart muscle damage from a heart attack and on the extent of blockage in the coronary arteries. Reducing the initial damage, as well as taking the vital steps to reduce your risk factors for a second attack (i.e. lowering your cholesterol, normalizing blood pressure, supervised exercise, diet and weight reduction, reducing stress, etc.) are the keys to living a long and healthy life after suffering a heart attack.

How Your Heart Works

Your heart is a beautifully designed pump whose purpose is to deliver blood, together with life-giving oxygen and nutrients, to every cell, tissue, and organ of your body. Shaped like a pear and weighing about eleven ounces, the heart sits in the center of the chest, pointing up toward the right shoulder. It is a specialized muscle divided into four chambers, two on the right and two on the left, which are separated by one-way valves. The heart therefore is in a sense two pumps, because it's right and left sides are separated from each other.

There are four chambers in the heart, two--an atrium and a ventricle--on either side. The right atrium is a receptacle for the veins transporting blood back into the heart. When it has filled, the chamber's muscle contracts and empties its contents through the tricuspid valve and into the right ventricle.

The right ventricle transports oxygen-depleted blood to the lungs across the pulmonary valve and into the pulmonary artery and its branches. The blood travels into progressively smaller arteries and eventually into tiny vessels called capillaries. These vessels have very thin and delicate linings that allow oxygen and other nutrients to move into and out of the bloodstream. The oxygen in the lungs moves across the capillary membranes and into the blood, where it hooks up with the red blood cells. The capillaries also eliminate carbon dioxide, received from the tissues and cells of the body, to the lungs where it is exhaled into the atmosphere.

Once these exchanges have been completed, the blood moves through the pulmonary vessels to the left side of the heart. The left atrium is the collecting chamber. Once it is full, the left atrium moves its contents across the mitral valve into the left ventricle.

The left ventricle is by far the most powerful pumping chamber of the heart. Its contents must be propelled under pressure much higher than in the other chambers, so the oxygen-enriched blood can travel through the arteries of the body at a sufficient pressure to reach every cell and organ. Its powerful thrust sends blood through the aortic valve and into the aorta, the largest artery in the body. From there the blood continues flowing to the arteries.

This extraordinary round-trip takes about a minute and repeats itself every minute of your life. In an average person's lifetime, it is estimated that the heart contracts 2.5 billion times! Each day, the average heart beats some 100,000 times and pumps more than 2,000 gallons of blood through the equivalent of approximately 60,000 miles of blood vessels! Your heart is a mighty organ indeed!

Hypertension or High Blood Pressure

Many people suffer from hypertension (also known high blood pressure). Blood pressure is essential to move blood from your heart through your veins and arteries. But when the pressure is too high it can become dangerous, making your heart work harder and increasing your risk for heart problems, such as heart attacks and strokes. Hypertension may also increases your potential risk for various problems such as kidney disease even blindness.

Hypertension has numerous causes and it is difficult to pinpoint any one cause. Sometimes it could also be a side effect of any medication that you may be taking. This is referred to as secondary hypertension. You can take precautions against hypertension by regular checkups with doctors to figure out whether you are hypertensive or not.

The good news is that hypertension is treatable. If you change your eating habits and make sure you get plenty of exercise you should be able to reduce your blood pressure. Your doctor may also prescribe certain medications that can help to lower your blood pressure but you should make these lifestyle changes as well. Reducing stress and learning how to deal with it is also beneficial.

Being overweight certainly contributes hypertension. Studies have shown that even losing is little as ten pounds may be beneficial in lowering blood pressure. If you begin exercising and eating healthy you should be able drop ten pounds quite easily. Just don't to lose the weight immediately. It takes time to gain weight and time to lose weight; you should focus on changing your habits of exercise and eating, not just on losing weight.

If you are unsure about how to start losing weight, consider joining a gym and getting a personal trainer. You only need a few sessions and in that time they can show you how to use each of the machines to your full advantage as well as plan out a program that will help you lose weight and become more active.

A nutritionist is also a good idea if you have poor eating habits. They will often have you write down for a week what you're eating and then come up with a plan that you can stick to. Nothing frightens people more than the prospect of trading their chicken fingers for carrot sticks. Nutritionists can help make the transition to eating healthy smooth and simple.

If you smoke you need to quit. It's as simple as that. There is no excuse for smoking and no health benefits whatsoever which can cause only serious problems. Smoking raises your blood pressure and creates dangerous hypertension. You need to quit as soon as possible, not only for your health but also for the health of those around you. Second hand smoke is extremely dangerous as well. Be sure to talk to your doctor about different options to help you quit smoking since you don't need to do it on your own.

Hypertension is a very serious condition but it is treatable. You need to start making changes in your lifestyle today to combat the potentially dangerous problems that go hand in hand with hypertension. Even if you don't have hypertension you should quit smoking, start exercising, and start eating healthy. Stopping health problems before they start is the best way to ensure you stay healthy and happy.

Calcium channel blockers

Calcium channel blockers

calcium channel blockers are drugs that are given to slow the rate at which calcium passes into the heart to relax the vessels through which blood flows. These vessels relaxed make it easy to move the blood and help maintain low blood pressure.

calcium channel blockers are prescribed for people with heart and blood circulation problems including hypertension and angina. They affect the movement of calcium into cells of the heart and blood vessels. Accordingly, relax blood vessels and increase blood flow to the heart, then, to resume normal operation.

Function of calcium channel blockers, calcium channel blockers

regulate the flow of blood to the heart. Calcium is essential for the proper functioning of these cells, and calcium channel blockers prevent calcium from entering the cell and cause a change in his work.

Calcium reduces the contraction of heart muscles and reduces the amount of electrical impulses to regulate the heart beat. This contributes to the widening of blood vessels that facilitate the rapid flow of blood.

Diseases that calcium channel blockers treat

calcium channel blockers treat diseases and conditions:

* The angina and the pain caused by poor circulation of blood in the heart
* Hypertension
* Abnormal heart rhythms
* Coronary heart disease

Side effects of calcium channel blockers

Like many other drugs, calcium channel blockers can also cause side effects. These side effects can occur if the drug does not meet the patient or whether it is not taken as recommended by the doctor.

Some of these side effects can include:

* Headaches
* Swelling of the ankles
* Sentiment fatigue
* Upset stomach
* Dizziness
* Increase appetite

The prudent use of calcium channel blockers

calcium channel blockers should be used after consulting a doctor and he / she recommended calcium blocker for your state. It must be taken with caution especially if one has:

* Liver problem
* Rein disorder
* Heart Failure
* Severe low blood pressure
* Diabetes

This medication should be taken with food or milk. The doctor must be followed on how it should be taken and how. Blood pressure should be monitored while taking the drug.

Things to avoid when taking calcium channel blockers

* High doses of calcium or vitamin D supplements
* Grapefruit juice because it interferes with the absorption of the drug <> * Alcohol, as it increases blood pressure
* Drugs for hypertension

Calcium Channel Blockers are designed to help blood circulation and normal functioning of the heart, but it should be taken only after consulting a doctor about the effects and benefits of this medicine.

Excessive alcohol consumption and high-risk sexual behavior

Psychiatry scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis found that a clinical diagnosis of alcohol dependence among young adults is associated with having a high number of sexual partners.

"Some participants in the study reported 50 or 100 partners, and research shows - and common sense tells you that the more sex partners you have, the greater the likelihood that you will meet someone one with an STD, "says first author Patricia Cavazos - Rehg, Ph.D., research instructor in the Department of Psychiatry. "The chances increase as unwanted pregnancies and other complications."

The study, reported in the recent issue of the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, also found links between a disorder diagnosis and conduct of a high number of sexual partners and between the problem of alcohol and more partners. Of the three, however, the dependence on alcohol has the most influence on the number of sexual partners.

alcohol dependency is excessive consumption of alcohol, which is harmful to the physical and mental health. Some people drink alcohol every day. Others may drink only sporadically, but consume large amounts of alcohol when they drink. This type of binge drinking is especially common among adolescents and young adults, like those who were interviewed in this study. Drinkers, conversely, have more of the same symptoms, and can move to become dependent, but they are not dependent on alcohol when the study was conducted.

Conduct disorder is a disorder disruptive, like ADHD and oppositional defiant disorder. Symptoms tend to include truancy from school, setting fires, fighting to maintain or being cruel to people or animals.

those in this study, who were dependent on alcohol, 45 percent reported having more than 10 sexual partners. In addition, 37 percent of those with a diagnosis of conduct disorder had at least 10 partners.

Prior studies have linked excessive alcohol consumption and behavior disorders in high-risk sexual behavior. This study focused specifically on the number of partners, and it sets a high risk using more typically seen in the psychiatric literature.

"To my knowledge, most of the research among young adults used a standard" up to six "sexual partners when considering the risks," said Cavazos - Rehg. "But the average number of partners for the people of this study was 9.26, instead of six or more partners that our high risk, we have increased that number to 10."

Scientists have conducted interviews with 601 people between 18 and 25 years. All were unmarried and alcohol dependent correlation of individuals who participated in the National Study of collaboration genetics of alcoholism (COGA), an ongoing project involving interviews and DNA samples from over 10000 people. The COGA database of people who inpatient and outpatient alcohol treatment centers and their families. Families of the COGA study commonly have several members with alcohol dependence.

"We scored these subjects according to the three levels of involvement - not alcohol dependent, and the problem of alcoholic beverage, and showed how a gradual increase in the non-dependence to alcohol problems addiction to alcohol is linked to an increased number of sexual partners, "said Cavazos - Rehg. "We observed that 22 percent of non-dependent people have more than 10 partners, compared with 31 percent of drinkers and 45 percent of those who are dependent on alcohol. We also found a risk to a high number of sexual partners among the disorder with conduct, regardless of their level of involvement alcohol. And those with both alcohol dependence and conduct disorder were most likely to have a high number of sexual partners. "

Cavazos - Rehg suggests when young people are treated for alcohol problems - therapy patients hospitalized for alcohol dependence for emergency care as a result of related l alcohol car accident, it might be a good idea to see STDs or HIV infection and discuss safe sex practices. The staff of STDs also might want to ask patients about their alcohol consumption and to provide references relating to alcohol treatment centers.

"Perhaps clinicians can work together to address these two problems," she said. "A better understanding of alcohol dependence and conduct disorder could be part of a global strategy to reduce the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies."

Calcium food could prevent the spread of breast cancer to bone

Their findings are reported in the October 1 issue of Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

According to the researchers, about 70 percent of patients who develop breast cancer have advanced secondary tumors in the bone. The spread of cancer to the bones leads to cellular processes that exist physically break the bone, leading to further pain and disease. In fact, the breakdown of bone and the bones of what new forms of higher growth author Colin R. Dunstan, Ph.D., terms a "vicious circle" that transforms the bones in an environment conducive to the growth of cancer.

To better understand the role of bone turnover in the spread of cancer, Dunstan and his team compared the effects of low and the supply of calcium in mice. They found that calcium deficiency food-independent chemical factors that control the turnover is associated with an increase significantly higher in the cancer cell proliferation and the total proportion of the bone, which had been penetrated .

"These results may have implications for patients with breast cancer and bone metastases, which are at high risk of developing metastatic disease," said Dunstan. These women may be at increased risk for the devastating effects of bone metastases.
